The Best Australian Writing for 2024

Who said evolutionary genetics and poetry couldn’t meet in the middle?

Professor Jenny Graves and I as co-writers of the libretto for the choral oratorio Origins – Of the Universe, of Life, of Species, of Humanity have been rewarded with the libretto being included in The Best Australian Science Writing 2024.

To say Jenny and I are over the moon is an understatement!!!  It was a huge thrill to co-write the libretto, then be singing in the premiere performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre in July 2023, and now have our work recognised alongside the works of other Australian scientists.

We’ve also submitted the libretto for consideration for the Bragg UNSW Press Prize for Science Writing, established in 2012 to recognise excellence in Australian science writing.  If we just happen to take out the prize, or perhaps runner up, or even just a mention…there will be some champagne popping going on at Heidelberg Choral Society.  Watch this space!
